This one is for my oldest son. My eleven year old asked me earlier this week where the term Black Friday came from. Black Friday is the day after Christmas. The phrase is believed to have originated in the Philadelphia area. It is the first day of the Christmas shopping season. The day is famous, or infamous if you prefer, for its retail sales which are very hectic and cause a lot of traffic. The widespread chaos is meant to refer to Black Tuesday of the stock market crash of 1929. Some people understand the term to be an Accounting term meaning the point in the year where businesses begin turning a profit, hopefully coming out of the red (referring to an accounting term) into the black. It is highly unlikely this meaning is correct, because as far back as research goes the phrase has always been associated with traffic and crowds.

pirate costumes

Halloween product are starting to appear in stores. Halloween is a fun and exciting holiday for kids around the world who celebrate it. People dress up in many different costumes and go out for candy. You’ll see many different things on this night such as aliens monsters and cowboys. But one thing that you’ll probably see more of than any other is kids in pirate costumes. My two favorite things about Halloween are watching my kids have fun and giving out the candy.

plastic easter eggs

Here’s a simple and affordable way to decorate the trees or bushes in your yard for Easter. Buy a few bags of plastic Easter eggs. They’re usually $1-$3, depending on how many eggs are in the bag. Make a small hole in the top of each egg. Run a piece of string through the hole, tying off into a know. You should now have something that will remind you of a Christmas ornament. Hang the eggs on the branches of your trees or bushes and you’ll have a very colorful and festive yard decoration.

Thanksgiving is almost here. One of the things that I’ve done almost every year for as long as I can remember is watch the Thanksgiving Day parade. Earthcam will be offering a Thanksgiving webcam with a live webcast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thanksgiving, beginning at approximately 9:30am. Multiple cameras will offer several different views.

Chair Covers
Something I saw recently that was really cute and affordable and changed the look of a room is holiday chair covers. I saw chair covers designed to look like turkeys and pilgrims on sale The Christmas Tree Shops for $2.99 each. They’re basically a pillowcase with a design and they cover the whole back of the chair. I like that they’re reusable and washable. I think I’m going to pick up a set to use this year.
